Dr. Stephanie Hon, DVM, DACVAA

Dr. Hon is a board-certified anesthesiologist currently serving as the Assistant Director of Surgery and Anesthesia for the Center of Animal Resources and Education (CARE) at Cornell University. Originally from Florida, she completed her veterinary school at University of Florida, her rotating internship at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital, and her anesthesia residency at Cornell University. She served as a faculty member at Cornell University from residency until beginning as Assistant Director with CARE.

Throughout her career in academia, she has worked in concert with primary services both for routine operations as well as consultation for challenging species or pathologies. Dr Hon prides herself in championing the tenets of accessible specialty care, teaching with an approachable, immediately-applicable mindset. She has provided locum and per diem services for academic tertiary referral centers, multiple-specialty referral private practices, single-specialty clinics, and general practices, both equine and small animal. Dr Hon has also led both specialty and general practice continuing education lecture series. With a passion for practice-ready medicine, Dr. Hon recently created her own consulting company, Anesthesia Black LLC, and she is looking forward to increasing the veterinary community's access to both board-certified anesthesiologists and Veterinary Technician Specialists (Anesthesia and Analgesia).

January 20, 2025 7pm - 8pm: Creating an Anesthesia Care Team (1 CEU) (MVMA Members: $35; Nonmembers: $50) - Register for Session 1

The landscape of anesthesia in veterinary medicine is changing. There are many ways to incorporate specialty anesthesia services in your practice, whether you are in multi-specialty, single-specialty, or general practice. With options for full-time or contract services, in-person or virtual care, consultations or primary case management, case-based training or didactic systems, you can tailor an Anesthesia Care Team (ACT) that provides robust patient care and value to your practice. This course will explain the ACT, its individual makeup, service options, and its importance to the pursuit of excellent quality of care.

February 3, 2025 7pm-8pm: Sedation Strategies Part I (1 CEU) (MVMA Members: $35; Nonmembers: $50) - Register for Session 2
Sedation is a common decision making point where both formative anesthesia knowledge base and experience are required to secure good outcomes and avoid adverse events. In Part I of this lecture series, we will discuss the most common drug choices for sedation, basic pharmacology and physiology to validate these choices, and strategies for application in real-world clinical scenarios. In-lecture case examples will give you the opportunity to practice new decision making skills with opportunity for discussion.

February 17, 2025 7pm-8pm: Sedation Strategies Part II (1 CEU) (MVMA Members: $35; Nonmembers: $50) - Register for Session 3
In Part II of this lecture series, we will discuss the additional common drug choices for sedation, basic pharmacology and physiology to validate these choices, and strategies for application in real-world clinical scenarios. In-lecture case examples will give you the opportunity to practice new decision making skills with opportunity for discussion. Case examples in Part II will focus on more difficult clinical scenarios, such as aggressive animals, animals with comorbidities, etc.

March 3, 2025 7pm-8pm: Induction Agents (1 CEU) (MVMA Members: $35; Nonmembers: $50) - Register for Session 4
Induction is a potential high-risk period in any anesthetic event. As with sedation strategies, formative anesthesia knowledge base and experience are required to secure good outcomes and avoid adverse events when choosing induction agents and their application. This lecture will review the most common drug choices for induction, basic pharmacology and physiology to validate these choices, and strategies for application in real-world clinical scenarios. In-lecture case examples will give you the opportunity to practice new decision making skills with opportunity for discussion.

March 17, 2025 7pm-8pm: Complications of General Anesthesia (1 CEU) (MVMA Members: $35; Nonmembers: $50) - Register for Session 5
All general anesthesia causes four major common complications: bradycardia, hypotension, hypoventilation, and hypothermia. This lecture will review why these complications are universal to all general anesthetic events as well as the practical physiology behind them. Mitigation strategies for each will be discussed so that they can be immediately employed. The application of these strategies will solidify best practices across all anesthetics in a practice, regardless of patient health status.

March 31, 2025 7pm - 8pm: Non-Cardiac Anesthesia for the Cardiac Patient (1 CEU) (MVMA Members: $35; Nonmembers: $50) Register for Session 6

Underlying cardiomyopathy comorbidity is a major source of anxiety for the anesthetist and primary provider. Often, these patients may present for routine anesthetic events (spay/neuter, dental, acute abdomen, etc), and while the procedure is simple, the anesthesia may be complex and warrant access to specialty consultation or care. This lecture series will culminate in a review of the management of common cardiac comorbidities that may present for anesthesia: Mitral Valve Disease, Dilated Cardiomyopathy, and Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. The lecture will build upon knowledge from prior lectures, but previous attendance is not necessary for foundational understanding.
